Stuff

Here's a blog about some stuff. Stuff I like right now 1. How everyone gets outta my way when I'm pushing a grocery cart. I don't even need to write "wide load" and tape it to my back side. People just know , it seems, and when I walk down the aisles looking for chicken marinade, the seas part like I was Moses. 2. When our baby stretches inside of me and sticks her bum out so far that my belly looks like Mount Vesuvius. Funny, entertaining, and sweet, all rolled into one. 3. Tylenol in the morning, Tylenol in the afternoon, Tyelenol in the evening. Memo to me: write the Inventor of Tylenol a thank you note. 4. Pillows. I need about 23 pillows right now. The need grows on a daily and hourly basis. 5. My hospital has a dessert cart that comes by at like 11:00 a.m. every day. They also have breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Yes, it may suck to be in the hospital, but at least you're eatin' good in the neighborhood. 6. Tater tots. This one is totally inexpl...

Demolition Derby

Image
Hemlock Fair: Demolition Derby. Reporting live at the scene: Liz and Trent Materials Needed: One car that has been sitting in someone's front yard for 30 to 40 years; 279 bottles of spray paint to dedicate the car to "Dad" "Mom" and "Bubba"; A full gas tank conveniently placed in the back seat so as to avoid that explosion that'll take you to Jesus. Rules: Don't hit the driver's side door.... but do what you can to hit EVERY other side of the car AND, for bonus points, do what you can to flip your car over because you WILL be the next hero of the show. Cleanup Crew: No zambonis. Just your John Deere to pick up what's left of the old girl. We must say, the John Deere was every bit as mesmerizing as the old Zamboni. Can't take your eyes off it... Saturday night we experienced one of the great unknown highlights of Upstate New York. In the little known land of Hemlock there is a county fair where, once a year, the fine folk of Hemlock...

Free Speech

A couple days ago, Trent sent me a Supreme Court decision regarding First Amendment rights for students within the public education system. As anything having to do with education is one of my life's passions, I read it with great interest and the issues in the case have been percolating in my mind for the last couple of days. The basics of the case are these: a kid held up a 14 foot banner during a school sponsored rally that had a vague yet obvious reference to marajuana. Since drug references like these, particularly those that advocate illegal drug use, are against school policy, the principal asked the boy and his friends to put the banner away. Everyone complied except the main kid. After haggling with him, she finally confiscated the banner and suspended him for 10 days. The kid sued the principal for damages as well as the school district on the premise that they violated his First Amendment rights. The case took 5 years to get to the Supreme Court, and the court (in a 5-4 ...

Utah, we love thee!

Image
We're back in New York after a FABULOUS time in Utah. While we love livin' the good life here in Upstate, nothing really beats a trip home. Our memories of the mountains, the sunshine, the family, the friends, the laughter, the food, and so much more will linger with us for many months to come. Here's a Top 10 recap of our trip, with a little commentary and a few photos. Trent's Utah Top 10: I feel privileged that I get to actually write on my wife's blog!! I would never do this if Liz hadn't started it... I'm such a private soul, loathe to share with others my life. I prefer to sit alone in dark rooms and imagine what it would be like to talk with people.... But, seriously, my top ten Utah moments? (Not in any particular order - lest you souls mentioned out there start to rank yourselves as my favorites) 1. Singing to Thad once again. He was particularly listless on this trip and I wondered whether he remembered me. I've been gone more than a year. I w...
